Desert Horned Viper

  • Morphology Its body length is 75cm and the tail is 8 cm long. It has broad anvil-shaped head with center-ridged (or keeled) scales, small eyes with vertical pupils. It has a pair of supraocular "horns", although hornless individuals do occur. The belly is white. The tail, which may have a black tip, is usually thin.
  • Ethology The snake travels by “sidewinding,” during which they press their weight into the sand or soil, leaving parallel lines impressions. If threatened, they rapidly rub their coils together. This rubbing produce a sizzling sound, rather like water on a hot plate. The proper term for this is stridulation.
