- Morphology Body length: 38 cm. Medium sized bird that is readily identified by the prominent white leading edge of the upper wing, contrasting with the dark grey wing color. In summer, the head has a brownish black color with a white half ring around the eye, the reddish colored legs and bill. The bill has a black tip. In winter, this brown hood retreats and the birds have a largely white head with a dark spot behind the eye.
