- Morphology Body length:25 cm. The only black and white kingfisher in the region. Males have a narrow second breast-band while females have a single broken breast band. The breast bands are black. It has a white supercilium and black eyes. The crest is neat and black. The white tail has black marks in the end.
- Ethology It usually hunts by hovering over the water to detect prey and diving vertically bill-first to capture fish.
